"A Carousel of Gardens" was the theme for the 16th Annual Arkansas Flower & Garden Show held March 2-4 of this year at the State House Convention Center in Little Rock.

As part of the ongoing process of education through the Arkansas Florists Association (AFA), the Education Committee of AFA invites designers to compete in a Professional Florist Tabletop Design Contest.  These designs are displayed on 60" round tables and depict the them of the show.   This avenue of design allows the floral designer to create something "outside the box" through thought and design to which they are not normally exposed and thus expanding their ideas and creativity.

This year, for the first time, the first place winner received a $1,000 award ($500 from each organization).   This award is being presented to give the winner an opportunity to further their education in floral design if they desire and to encourage more participation in the contest.

The tabletops are on display throughout the weekend in the atrium of the convention center.  Everyone who enters and leaves the show must pass by the tabletop displays.  With almost 11,000 people in attendance, this is one of the few places a designer is able to expose their talent and product to the general public.

Six designers from all across the state participated in this year's contest.  They were Michelle Powers of Shirley's Flowers in Rogers; Rusty Eldridge of Springdale Flowers in Springdale; Linda Harkenreader of Cabot Florist in North Little Rock; Jennifer South of Ann's Bridal in Searcy; Kathy Rodocker of Distinctive Designs by Tannarah in Mayflower and Bitsy Carter of Hope Floral in Hope.

The Horticulture Judges of the Arkansas Flower and Garden show presented the Best Tabletop Award to Kathy Rodocker of Distinctive Designs by Tannarah in Mayflower.

The Professional Judges of the Arkansas Florists Association presented the 1st Place Award and winner of the $1,000 prize to Rusty Eldridge of Springdale Flowers in Springdale; 2nd Place Award to Kathy Rodocker of Distinctive Designs by Tannarah of Mayflower and 3rd Place to Bitsy Carter of Hope Floral in Hope.

Two separate programs were presented in the DIY Information Center.  These presentations are made on a wide range of subject with each programs lasting 15 to 20 minutes.

Chip Philips of Brenda's Flowers in Batesville presented his program at noon on Friday.  It was entitled "Cut Flowers for Your Table".

J. Ted Lewis of Floral Expess in Little Rock presented a program on Saturday at noon entitled "Mary,Mary, How Does Your Garden Grow?"   This program featured hand held designs you can create from your garden.

The programs were very well received and involved questions from the audience.

AFA's presence at the show is a way for the public to interact with designers in a venue outside the local flower shop.    There are many people involved in this effort and a big "Thank You" to Jack Gaston of Southern Wholesale for his support and donation of floral material used throughout the show; Kellie Pruett, the 2006 Tabletop winner, for her organization and management of the designers and the contest;  Lou Cook, Bill Plummer and Monroe Cranford for judging the tables.
